Victor Mesa Jr.
Victor Mesa Jr. Dealing with hamstring tightness
Sat, Feb 22, 2025, 8:21 AM
Mesa reported tightness in his right hamstring Saturday, Christina De Nicola of MLB.com reports.
Analysis: The severity of Mesa's injury is currently unknown, but the Marlins will give him a couple of days to rest before re-evaluating him. The 23-year-old outfielder reached Triple-A for the first time last season, where he slashed .259/.319/.430 with 13 home runs, 51 RBI and five stolen bases across 355 plate appearances, but he has an outside chance to break camp with the big-league squad.
Eury Perez
Eury Perez Goes on 60-day IL
Thu, Feb 20, 2025, 2:37 PM
The Marlins placed Perez (elbow) on the 60-day injured list Thursday.
Analysis: The transaction frees up a spot on the 40-man roster for Seth Martinez, who has been claimed off waivers. Perez has been throwing off a mound and doing well as he continues his rehab from Tommy John surgery, but he is not expected to join the Marlins' rotation until around midseason.
Seth Martinez
Seth Martinez Claimed by Fish
Thu, Feb 20, 2025, 2:37 PM
The Marlins claimed Martinez off waivers from Arizona on Thursday.
Analysis: The 30-year-old righty was pushed off the Diamondbacks' 40-man roster Monday to make room for Kendall Graveman (shoulder). Martinez spent all of last season with the Astros, turning in a 3.59 ERA and 1.27 WHIP alongside a 36:18 K:BB over 52.2 regular-season innings. Assuming he keeps a similar level of production during spring training, he'll have a good chance of winning a spot in Miami's Opening Day bullpen. Eury Perez (elbow) was placed on the 60-day injured list in a corresponding move.
Woo-Suk Go
Woo-Suk Go Suffers fractured finger
Thu, Feb 20, 2025, 8:32 AM
Go was diagnosed with a fractured right index finger Thursday, Christina De Nicola of MLB.com reports.
Analysis: He will be re-evaluated in a couple weeks. Go spent all of the 2024 season in the minors, holding a 6.54 ERA and 52:22 K:BB over 52.1 innings and the Double- and Triple-A levels. He was removed from the Marlins' 40-man roster last June.
Jesus Sanchez
Jesus Sanchez Will get some reps in center field
Tue, Feb 18, 2025, 8:27 AM
Marlins manager Clayton McCullough said Tuesday that Sanchez (elbow) will play some center field during spring training, Isaac Azout of FishOnFirst.com reports.
Analysis: Sanchez didn't play center field at all in 2024, but he started six games there in 2023 and 74 games at the position in 2022. The 27-year-old is still likely to see most of his action in right field in 2025, but it's possible he's used in center field on occasion. Derek Hill and Dane Myers are expected to see most of the reps in center field for the Marlins. Sanchez is currently overcoming right elbow inflammation but is expected to be cleared for full activities soon.
Jesus Sanchez
Jesus Sanchez Recovering from elbow inflammation
Mon, Feb 17, 2025, 12:25 PM
Sanchez is recovering from right elbow inflammation, Christina De Nicola of MLB.com reports.
Analysis: Sanchez's hitting has continue uninterrupted and he is in the final stages of a throwing program, so it sounds like this is just a minor speed bump. The 27-year-old is projected to open the 2025 campaign as the Marlins' primary right fielder and should bat in the middle of the lineup.
Max Meyer
Max Meyer Working on expanding arsenal
Sun, Feb 16, 2025, 10:07 AM
Meyer worked with new Marlins pitching coach Daniel Moskos this offseason on grips for a sinker and a sweeper, as well as on refining his changeup, Christina De Nicola of MLB.com reports.
Analysis: "My slider is going to be more down in depth and my sweeper's going to come across the plate," Meyer said Friday before displaying his new arsenal in a live batting practice session. "I feel like with the movement, there's definitely a big separation between those two... My change is going to be a really good pitch, too, one of my best pitches. I feel like all my pitches are one of my best pitches right now. I just have crazy confidence in them that I haven't had a lot in the past going through the injury." Meyer has relied mainly on two pitches, his mid-90s fastball and nasty slider, dating back to his college days, and if even one of his other offerings can become a quality pitch, it would significantly improve his chances of not just sticking in the rotation but reaching his sky-high ceiling as a starter.
Xzavion Curry
Xzavion Curry Remains in organization
Fri, Feb 14, 2025, 2:24 PM
Curry cleared waivers and was outrighted to Triple-A Jacksonville on Friday, Daniel Alvarez-Montes of ElExtraBase.com reports.
Analysis: The right-hander was designated for assignment by the Marlins on Tuesday but will stick in the organization after passing through waivers unclaimed. Curry will remain in big-league camp as a non-roster invitee but is likely to open the campaign at the Triple-A level.
Max Meyer
Max Meyer Throws live batting practice
Fri, Feb 14, 2025, 10:46 AM
Meyer (shoulder) threw live batting practice Friday, Christina De Nicola of MLB.com reports.
Analysis: Meyer's 2024 season ended in early September due to right shoulder bursitis, but it appears he is entering camp this spring without any restrictions. Assuming good health, the young right-hander should have a leg up for one of the spots in the Marlins' rotation. Meyer posted a 5.68 ERA, 1.42 WHIP and 46:19 K:BB through 57 innings in 2024.
Dax Fulton
Dax Fulton Faces hitters Thursday
Thu, Feb 13, 2025, 11:07 AM
Fulton (elbow) threw live batting practice to a number of hitters Thursday, Kevin Barral of FishonFirst.com reports.
Analysis: The extent of Fulton's throwing session isn't fully known, but the fact that he was facing hitters in the early stages of camp is a sign that he's healthy again after he missed the entire 2024 season while recovering from his second career Tommy John surgery, which he underwent in the summer of 2023. Despite the major red flags on his health record, the Marlins still protected Fulton from the Rule 5 Draft this winter and added him to their 40-man roster. The 23-year-old lefty isn't expected to be a factor in the majors anytime soon, as he'll need to prove his health and turn in quality results in the upper levels of the minors before he makes his big-league debut.
Sandy Alcantara
Sandy Alcantara Confirmed as Opening Day starter
Thu, Feb 13, 2025, 8:51 AM
Alcantara will be the Marlins' Opening Day starter on March 27 versus the Pirates, Christina De Nicola of MLB.com reports.
Analysis: He'll likely be opposed by Paul Skenes, although the Pirates have not officially announced their Opening Day starter yet. The Marlins are sure to limit Alcantara's workload to some degree in his first season back from Tommy John surgery, but he's more than 16 months removed from the operation and was the only real option to take the ball Opening Day.
Braxton Garrett
Braxton Garrett Goes to 60-day IL
Wed, Feb 12, 2025, 1:04 PM
The Marlins placed Garrett (elbow) on the 60-day injured list Wednesday.
Analysis: The transaction clears a spot on the 40-man roster for right-hander Cal Quantrill, who signed a one-year contract with the Marlins in a corresponding move. Garrett underwent UCL revision surgery with an internal brace on his left elbow in December and will be sidelined for the entire 2025 season.
Cal Quantrill
Cal Quantrill Gets MLB contract from Miami
Wed, Feb 12, 2025, 12:41 PM
The Marlins signed Quantrill to a one-year, $3.5 million contract Wednesday, Alden Gonzalez of ESPN.com reports.
Analysis: Quantrill was non-tendered by the Rockies earlier this offseason after posting a 4.98 ERA, 1.52 WHIP and 110:69 K:BB over 148.1 innings covering 29 starts in 2024. The 30-year-old did have a solid stretch with the Guardians from 2021 to 2022, posting a 3.16 ERA and 1.19 WHIP over 336 regular-season innings, although his 4.10 FIP during that span was more indicative of how he pitched. Quantrill should slide into a Marlins rotation that lacks established options at the back end.
Sandy Alcantara
Sandy Alcantara Completes live BP session
Wed, Feb 12, 2025, 10:27 AM
Alcantara (elbow) threw his first live batting practice session of spring training Wednesday, Kevin Barral of FishonFirst.com reports.
Analysis: The Marlins' willingness to let Alcantara face off against hitters in the first week of spring training suggests that he experienced no setbacks over the offseason while he completed the final stages of his recovery from his Oct. 6, 2023 Tommy John surgery. Miami could still elect to slow play Alcantara's integration into the Grapefruit League pitching schedule as a matter of caution, but the 2022 National League Cy Young Award winner looks well on his way to being ready to go for Opening Day. Alcantara could struggle to immediately recapture his pre-surgery velocity and command, though the fact that his arm operation was more than 16 months ago should help his chances of regaining form more quickly than if he were attempting to return on a shorter recovery timeframe.
Andrew Nardi
Andrew Nardi Dealing with lower-back injury
Wed, Feb 12, 2025, 8:51 AM
Marlins manager Clayton McCullough said Wednesday that Nardi is dealing with lower-back inflammation, Christina De Nicola of MLB.com reports.
Analysis: McCullough revealed last week that Nardi would be behind schedule at the start of camp, but he didn't disclose the nature of the injury at the time. The good news is the injury is not related to the elbow issue that caused the lefty to miss the final five-plus weeks of the 2024 season. If healthy, Nardi will be in the mix for high-leverage innings in the Marlins' bullpen.
Ronny Henriquez
Ronny Henriquez Claimed by Miami
Tue, Feb 11, 2025, 3:25 PM
The Marlins claimed Henriquez off waivers from the Twins on Tuesday.
Analysis: Henriquez has made 19 regular-season appearances at the major-league level, posting a 2.90 ERA and 24:8 K:BB over 31 innings. The 24-year-old does not have minor-league options remaining, so he will either be on the Marlins' Opening Day roster or have to go through waivers again.
Xzavion Curry
Xzavion Curry Designated for assignment
Tue, Feb 11, 2025, 3:23 PM
The Marlins designated Curry for assignment Tuesday.
Analysis: The transaction frees up a spot on the 40-man roster for waiver claim Ronny Henriquez. Curry holds a career 4.35 ERA and 98:43 K:BB over 147 innings covering parts of three major-league seasons. He stands a decent chance of clearing waivers.
Janson Junk
Janson Junk Joins club on minor-league pact
Mon, Feb 10, 2025, 12:48 PM
Junk signed a minor-league contract with the Marlins on Monday.
Analysis: Junk's deal includes an invitation to big-league spring training, where he'll get the chance to compete for a spot in Miami's Opening Day bullpen. The 29-year-old has seen MLB action in each of the last four campaigns, but he hasn't covered more than 17 innings in any of those seasons while bouncing around across five different organizations. Over his 15 career MLB appearances (seven starts) spanning 40 innings, Junk owns a 6.75 ERA and 1.78 WHIP.
Eury Perez
Eury Perez Throwing bullpens
Sat, Feb 8, 2025, 10:25 AM
Perez (elbow) threw a bullpen session Friday, working in his changeup along with fastballs, Christina De Nicola of MLB.com reports.
Analysis: The young right-hander is aiming to rejoin the Marlins' rotation around the All-Star break after undergoing Tommy John surgery in April 2024. "I'll say I feel very good right now," Perez said after Friday's session. "I will say 75 percent, just to put it out there in a number. But we're doing very well, just getting better." Perez began playing catch last September, and so far his recovery is proceeding as planned. In his absence, Valente Bellozo, Max Meyer and Adam Mazur are the leading candidates to fill out the back of Miami's rotation.
Xavier Edwards
Xavier Edwards Aiming for 60 stolen bases
Fri, Feb 7, 2025, 1:46 PM
Edwards said Friday that his goal is to steal 60 bases this season, Isaac Azout of FishOnFirst.com reports.
Analysis: Edwards pilfered 31 bags while being caught only four times over 70 games with the Marlins in 2024, so it's not unreasonable to think he could get to 60 stolen bases in 2025 if he has a full, healthy season. The 25-year-old speedster is light on power but should be an asset in the steals and batting average categories in 2025.
